Magazine writing

Created on behalf of alive magazine:

  • "A hard road well-travelled: Simon Whitfield's rewarding Olympic journey" (PDF) - This is a feature article profiling the Olympic gold medalist in triathlon. Simon Whitfield is a very busy man, and I was unable to get an interview with him any earlier than a Sunday two days after the deadline, made more difficult since I had to travel to Victoria for the interview. I managed to write and submit this article the very next day.
  • "Natural health highlights 2007" (PDF) - This is a feature article focusing on natural health over the year. I wrote this year-end review for the December 2007 issue six months earlier in June, so I had some struggles having only half a year’s worth of news to review. I was able to focus on the Canadian Health Food Association’s upcoming events to fill out the year.

Created on behalf of Plumb magazine:

  • "A Life in the Arts" (PDF) - This is a feature article profiling Lalainia Lindbjerg Strelau, an actress, singer, and musical theatre director. I interviewed Lalainia Lindbjerg Strelau at her home using a recorder. The interview was excellent, and she had a lot of stories to tell. The main challenge was editing down the hour-long interview to a short article only 600 words long.

Newspaper writing

Created on behalf of The Other Press:

  • "Sometimes it pays to think small" (external link) - This is is an opinions article meant to inspire people to help others whenever it is in their power to do so. I recycled an article I wrote years earlier by editing and updating it for a new audience. The newspaper was happy to print it a week after submission.
  • "Reel West Editor’s Advice for Freelance Writers" (PDF) - This is a feature article profiling Ian Caddell, entertainment writer for the Georgia Straight and editor of Reel West magazine. I contacted Ian Caddell for an interview and had to make do with one over the telephone. As such, I was unable to record the conversation and had to rely on my notes to write the article. The interview was fantastic, and Mr. Caddell had a great story to tell.
  • "Confessions of a Midnight Cyclist" (PDF) - This is is a feature article recounting my experience with the midnight bicycling phenomenon called "midnight mass." I wrote this article a few weeks after my experience, so I had to rely on memory and some brief notes. I also expanded what had been a 500 word article into a 900 word article upon my editor's request.

Public relations writing

  • "Biking without a helmet—an accident waiting to happen" (PDF) - This is is a sample news release. In a Public Relations course, we wrote several sample news releases in class, given only the basic facts upon which to write. We were only allowed 45 minutes to write each sample news release.
